In this weekly Throwback Thursday series, we surface memorable TV advertising spots from days past – ones that made us laugh, inspired us, or sparked an affinity for a brand.
The holiday season is in full swing, which means endless cooking, baking and then inevitably, misshapen cookies, charred casseroles, and vegetable peelings tossed into the garbage can with what you hope is a really strong trash bag.
In 1984, Glad’s brand Hefty made sure that we would never forget the importance of a reliable trash bag. Trash bags ads aren’t typically memorable, but these ads dominated the TV screen with its catchy chant, “hefty, hefty, hefty, wimpy, wimpy, wimpy!” The ad launched a series of campaigns for the brand all using the “hefty, hefty, hefty” chant – showing advertisers everywhere that if it’s working, sometimes it’s better to just stick with it.
It became so much a part of pop culture that the animated comedy series “Family Guy” even poked fun at it in one of its episodes – comparing a trash bag (hefty) to a condom (wimpy), forever cementing Hefty not as just another trash bag brand, but as a pop culture icon.
And even now, 20 years since that first ad, Hefty is still going strong. Earlier this year, Hefty launched a new tongue-and-cheek campaign featuring sexy garbage men, ending the spot with – you guessed it, “hefty, hefty, hefty.”
