In this weekly Throwback Thursday series, we surface memorable TV advertising spots from days past – ones that made us laugh, inspired us, or sparked an affinity for a brand.
Last week, Russian brewer Oasis Beverages shelled out $700 million to buy Pabst Brewing Co., the Milwaukee brewer behind American classics such as Pabst Blue Ribbon, Colt 45, and Old Milwaukee.
Pabst Blue Ribbon got its namesake during the American Civil War era, when the brewer tied blue ribbons around every bottle of beer until 1916. Since then, the beer’s gone through highs and lows, with US sales peaking in 1977 with 18 million barrels. In the past decade, the beer went through another high, doubling sales and gaining street cred from its old-school kitsch and low prices, where in 2013, it sold 6 million barrels in the US.
In honor of the classic American beer that “doesn’t change” and is “always good,” let’s toast to PBR with this classic from 1979. Cheers.
